Welcome to Sessions Watch, where we track all the cannabis-related quotes and actions of Donald Trump’s anti-legalization Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.
In a formal memo addressed to all 93 U.S. Attorneys, AG Jeff Sessions outlined how his newly-established Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety will operate.
In the most important clause of the April 5 document, as far as cannabis proponents are concerned, Sessions writes: “Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department’s overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities.”
The language is terse, but the silver lining here is clarity. Sessions is demanding a full report from the Task Force no later than July 27th, giving — for the first time — a vague timeline for which to expect any formal announcements from the Trump administration regarding marijuana policy.
