Welcome to Sessions Watch, where we track all the marijuana-related quotes and actions of Donald Trump’s anti-legalization Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.
Jeff Sessions delivered prepared remarks to law enforcement officials in Richmond, VA on Wednesday, March 15.
“I realize this may be an unfashionable belief in a time of growing tolerance of drug use. But too many lives are at stake to worry about being fashionable.”
“I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store.”
“I am astonished to hear people suggest that we can solve our heroin crisis by legalizing marijuana – so people can trade one life-wrecking dependency for another that’s only slightly less awful. Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life.”
The internet and media at large swiftly mocked the “slightly less awful” bit comparing a drug that kills thousands annually to one with zero deaths on its ledger. Further, Vox provided plenty of evidence to support marijuana as a tool to fight the heroin epidemic, citing its effectiveness as a painkiller and the downturn in opioid misuse and deaths in states which legalize medical marijuana.
According to a 2014 JAMA study, in the 13 states that passed laws allowing for the use of medical marijuana between 1999 and 2010, 25 percent fewer people die from opioid overdoses annually. #CannabisFacts 🌿🌿🌿 #legalize #cannabis #marijuana #medicalmarijuana #legalizeit #weedstagram #weed #420 #710 #i502 #seattlestoners #pnwstoners 🌱 #hightidelife 🌱
